Abrego Garcia's (no) Due Process

Welcome to The Foreign Report newsletter! This is where we're going to give you a little glimpse into what we covered on the show and some links for you to doom scroll through. Thank us later for ruining your day!

Speaking of days getting ruined, Kilmar Abrego Garcia, and plenty of others like him, have seen only dark days inside the terrorism detention facility in El Salvador. We cover how he had managed to have due process in 2019, but not in 2025.

And with an Iranian host you always get that Iran tea. Steve Witkoff is the lead negotiator in the Iran Deal 2.0 that's happening. And since we recorded the episode the talks have gone from Oman to Rome and somehow they are going "well." Here's the thing - so far, if things are going well, that means Witkoff and the Trump administration will try to strike the same deal as Obama did in 2015. But of course this one will be gold plated and delivered with Trump Steaks and NA Vodka. On the show we go over how far the Islamic Republic of Iran has come in their effort to get DA BOMB.

And as always we try to give you a little of what's happening in Congress because that's where it starts and ripples out to the world. We applaud Rep. Stephen Horsford and, as always, have a good laugh at the expense of JD Vance. Who apparently now is the harbinger of death! RIP WOKE POPE

ICYMI here are the stories we covered:

Kilmar Abrego Garcia

Kilmar Abrego Garcia was picked up and deported to a notoriously brutal detention facility in El Salvador despite having a court order protecting him from exactly that. Trump lawyers initially blamed an administrative error but claimed they were powerless to have him returned. The Supreme Court upheld a lower court ruling that the Trump Administration must "facilitate" the return of Abrego Garcia but so far the administration has avoided complying with those orders. TFR looked into the reasons for Abrego Garcia's initial run ins with ICE and how tattoos and other subjective criteria are being used to "identify" supposed terrorists, as well as what could come next in the case.

Iran

TFR recaps the relative success of the Obama-era Iran Nuclear Deal, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), that Trump scuttled in his first term. Seena even brought slides(!) to highlight the progress Iran has made since the deal was abandoned. We look at the parameters Trump has laid out for new deal and what failure could mean for the US, Israel, and Iran.
